CREATE A BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY OF MEADOW FLOWERS
If you have a patch of garden that’s not suitable for other plants, why not grow a mixture of wildflowers that will attract birds, bees and butterflies. You can create a stunning flower meadow practically anywhere.
WHERE TO GROW YOUR MEADOW
Poor soil is best for perennial flowers, whereas rich soil is better for annuals. You’ll find a wide variety of wildflower seed mixes available, and you can choose the one that’s most suitable for your soil type.
WHEN TO SOW YOUR FLOWER MEADOW
Seeds can be sown in March and April. Some wildflower mixes are better sown in September, depending on your soil conditions. Choose an open and sunny spot – it doesn’t matter if it’s flat or sloping.
PREPARE YOUR SEEDBED
Remove any weeds then dig or rotovate the soil before firming and raking to form a seedbed. There’s no need to dig in manure or fertiliser as this will encourage grasses that can crowd out wildflowers. Allow the soil to settle for four weeks.
EVENLY SCATTER SEEDS
To ensure good coverage, sow half the packet lengthways and the other half widthways. Then rake the soil lightly and water thoroughly. Use netting to protect the area if birds try to eat the seeds.
