? 5 FRUIT AND VEG PATCH JOBS TO DO THIS FEBRUARY ?
It’s never too early to start work on your fruit and vegetable garden. Here are five jobs that can be done this month.
1.  ADD GRIT TO YOUR SOIL
If the soil in your garden is heavy with clay or silt, you can improve it by digging in grit. Many plants, particularly Mediterranean herbs, prefer well-drained soil.  As an alternative, try a soil conditioner.
2.  CHIT POTATO TUBERS
Tubers need a cool, frost-free place with moderate light but not direct sunlight. Sprouts will grow within a few weeks. In six weeks, the shoots should be around 5cms long and dark in colour.
3.  SOW SALAD UNDERCOVER
Lettuces and other salad crops can be sown this month undercover for some early green leaves.
4.  FEED FRUIT TREES AND BUSHES
Adding potash fertiliser, such as Growmore, to the base of fruit trees and bushes will encourage fruiting and boost this year’s harvest.
5.  SORT SEEDS BY SOWING DATE
A simple but effective way to organise your sowing calendar is to use dividers and store your seed packets by the month in which they need to be sown. It saves time sorting through them later on.
