GROW YOUR OWN THIS JUNE

Do you fancy growing your own fruit and veg this year? You’re going to be busy this month! Here’s the incredible selection of plants and seeds you can get started with in June:

✓ Aubergines – Young aubergine plants can be planted outside this month, ready for the fruits to be fire roasted on the barbecue this summer.

✓ Beetroot – Brighten up your autumn salads with a striking selection of beetroots in different colours. You can sow beetroot seeds outdoors this month and they could reach maturity in as little as 12 weeks.

✓ Brussels sprouts – It’s time to start prepping your Christmas veg! Get your sprout plants out in the garden and you could be harvesting from September through to January.

✓ Cabbage – Summer and autumn varieties of cabbage can be planted out in the garden this month. Sow winter varieties as well and you could be harvesting cabbage from summer through to February.

✓ Carrots – Once you’ve tasted a freshly grown carrot, you won’t want to go back to buying them in the supermarket! Carrot seeds can be sown outdoors this month for cropping in around 20 weeks.

✓ Cauliflower – Plant your young cauliflower plants outside this month and you’ll be enjoying fresh cauliflower with your roasts this autumn.

✓ Chard – Seeds can be sown outdoors this month. Chard grows quickly and has a long harvesting season so you could be enjoying freshly picked chard in your salads and stir fries in as little as 4 weeks and for up to 10 months of the year.

✓ Chilli peppers – If you’ve been nurturing chilli pepper seedlings in your greenhouse or conservatory, now is the time for them to be planted outside. Pop them in a pot outside in a sunny, sheltered spot and you could be harvesting their fruits from August.

✓ Courgette – Young courgette plants can be planted outside this month ready to harvest in the summer. Try using spiralised courgette in place of spaghetti and top it with bolognese or a pasta sauce for a filling and nutritious meal with fewer calories.

✓ Peppers – Young pepper plants can be planted outside this month in a sunny spot, or better still in a greenhouse. Support the plants as the fruit develops and get ready to enjoy fresh, crunchy and colourful peppers.

✓ Pumpkins and marrows – It’s time to get competitive with the neighbours over who can grow the biggest pumpkin for halloween. Plant young plants outdoors now and harvest your marrows from summertime and pumpkins into the autumn.

✓ Radishes – Sow outdoors this month and you could be harvesting in as little as 4 weeks.

✓ Squash – It’s time to plant your young squash plants outside. The fruit should be ready to harvest from late summer into autumn; enjoy them roasted with some cinnamon and coconut.

✓ Swedes and turnips – It’s time to get started on that autumn stew veg! Swede and turnips can be sown outdoors this month.

✓ Sweetcorn – Sweet and crunchy sweetcorn can be planted out this month ready to enjoy as we head into autumn with a knob of butter and a sprinkling of Cornish sea salt.

✓ Tomatoes – It’s time to get your tomato plants in the garden, ready for juicy fresh tomatoes in your summer salads.
