A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO CHOOSING A PEAR TREE

As with apples, pears are divided into two categories; dessert pears for eating and cookers for cooking. However, the most popular ones to grow are the sweet-tasting varieties that can be eaten straight from the tree.

DELICIOUS PEAR VARIETIES:

BETH is a popular pear tree as it fruits in early September and produces pears with a delicious taste and texture. The flesh is soft and melts in your mouth while the flavour is sweet without being sugary.

CONCORDE is an ideal pear tree for beginners as it’s easy to grow and tolerant of most soil conditions. The pears are slightly larger than many other varieties with a bulbous lower half with partial russeting to the skin. Concorde is an attractive pear tree with dark, glossy green leaves and white flowers.

DOYENNE DU COMICE, popular with children, is a typical French style pear with yellowish-white flesh that’s very juicy, sweet and rich. It’s a late cropper with fruit from the end of October, continuing into November.

CONFERENCE pears are the most widely grown pear in the UK because of cropping reliability. It’s a variety that’s ideal for beginners because it is disease resistant. When fully ripe, the flesh is soft, juicy and sweet.
