Ahh, the trusty Clematis Montana. It is one of the most popular wall climbers, providing a sea of beautiful white and pink flowers. It is also a vigorous grower and can easily end up in a tangled mess, so here’s what to do to keep your Montana in check:

✓ Clematis Montana flowers in early spring on the previous year’s growth so prune immediately after flowering in mid-late spring.
✓ In young, newly-planted Montanas, prune to around 30cm above the ground to encourage multiple stems. This will enable you to train the plant over a wider and more even area.
✓ In older plants, use gardening shears to cut back the stems that will be starting to bunch up and come out from the wall. Cut them back to the wall.
