grow your own this feb
Do you fancy growing your own fruit and veg this year? Here’s what you can plant in February:
✓ Apples – plant potted apple trees in a sunny spot in the garden with plenty of room for growth.
✓ Aubergines – sow aubergine seeds using a heated propagator in the greenhouse.
✓ Brussels Sprouts – sow seeds indoors now or wait until March if you would like to sow outdoors.
✓ Cabbage (Summer) – sow seeds indoors now or wait until March if you would like to sow outdoors.
✓ Chilli Peppers – sow chilli pepper seeds indoors, using a propagator until after germination (7-10 days).
✓ Gooseberries – plant pot grown gooseberry plants in the garden, avoiding waterlogged or frozen soil.
✓ Kale – sow seeds indoors and kale leaves will be ready to harvest in as little as 30 days.
✓ Leeks – sow seeds in pots in the greenhouse using multi-purpose compost. Plant seedlings outside in March as long as the ground isn’t frozen.
✓ Lettuce – sow seeds indoors for lettuce ready to eat as soon as next month. Alternatively, lettuce grows well outside but wait until March to sow outdoors.
✓ Peppers – sow sweet pepper seeds indoors, using a propagator until after germination (7-10 days).
✓ Raspberries – plant raspberry plants out in the garden as long as the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen. You can get summer and autumn fruiting varieties.
✓ Rhubarb – start your rhubarb seeds off in a heated propagator or alternatively plant dormant crowns in the garden with plenty of manure, leaving the tip of the crown visible above the soil.
Always check your seed packets or individual plant information because sowing and planting instructions can vary between different varieties.
