New Year Gardening Essentials

HOMELEIGH PLANT DEPARTMENT

Happy New Year!

After the hard work of eating and drinking over Christmas we are all hoping for nice bright crisp days where we can wrap up warm and get outside.

The early bulbs will be coming up soon, look out for ‘snowdrop events’ near you.  Beautiful large gardens with acres of stunning snowdrops to bring a smile to your face open in early February.  Pencarrow House holds a great event with donations going to charity.

As we are all now looking at the bare bones of our gardens, it’s a great time to check fence panels, trellis and any guttering.  The winter winds can wreak havoc especially if you have well established climbers adding weight. Look to replace any damaged or rotting before your plants start growing again.

Tidying out the shed is a job for January too.  Have a good clear out, recycle what you can and sharpen your tools.  If you received garden centre vouchers for Christmas why not treat yourself to a new pair of secateurs and gloves

Here at Homeleigh we get seed potatoes in now.  Starting with the 1st early types, then 2nd early with maincrops following on in early spring. They sell out quickly so phone us and we will be happy to reserve some for you (01566771872).  Also good for growing in late winter are broad beans.  We sell packets of seed or established plants arrive here at the end of January.

If your pots need cheering up we have ‘tete a tete’ narcissi pots for sale.  Also my favourite – the tiny Iris reticulata. Such stunning colours for pots on the patio at a dull time of year.

If the ground isn’t frozen its still a great time to plant trees and shrubs.  They will add height and drama to the garden.  We have an amazing selection and will be happy to help you choose.

Keep feeding the birds, keep off your lawns and enjoy the longer days coming!
